Right-Wing Extremism

The Department of Homeland Security says right-wing extremism is on the rise throughout the country.

Remember all of the venom being spewed by right-wing pundits about this Homeland Security report? In the past two weeks we have had a doctor who performs abortions gunned down outside of his church (I find it very interesting that someone who claims to be pro-life murdered someone), and a lunatic open fire in the National Holocaust Museum. In no way can these stories be spun any other way. The DHS report was absolutely right. Because there is a liberal black dude in the oval office every idiot who is hateful will now turn ultra-hateful. I cannot understand why there was such fervor over the report when it is pretty obvious that violence from these types of groups was going to occur.

Vince, I disagree.

First of all, I'm impressed that you have managed to determine the instigating motives of these two murderers without having met them. How were you able to interview them from South Bend?

Second, don't you find it vaguely troubling when the federal government tracks various activist groups? I find it troubling, even when the Bush-era FBI did it.

Finally, what do you propose to do about these groups? Do you propose to applying your solution to all groups who resort to violence or just the "right-wing" ones?

First of all, I think there is enough background information on the two murderers to very clearly see what their motives were. Now what instigated them to commit these crimes can be argued.

Second, I find it very troubling that the government tracks activist groups. I also find it troubling that they monitor phone calls illegally to gather evidence on "religious extremists". However I find many people can justify the monitoring if it is for the "brown" variety of terrorists and not our homegrown. There seems to be a strange dichotomy on the word terrorist. I would consider some pro-life activists to be terrorists. Posting doctors home addresses, and where there children go to school on the internet seems to fall under the description of a terrorist. Yet I doubt many would label them as terrorists groups.

Finally, I don't propose we do anything. A solution to this problem cannot be had because there will always be groups on either side who will resort to such tactics.

Thanks for the discussion Jim!

Jim,

This article has a decent argument for instigation by media types.

Jim,

I agree that this is a non-sense story. However, there is a remarkable amount of misinformation being spread right now. For example, many still believe that the DHS only published a report on Right-Wing Extremists when the related Left-Wing Extremist Report was missed because it overlapped with the inauguration. Secondly, a significant chunk of our country believes that taxes have been raised since January when taxes have been cut.

The right has previously used fear of terrorists to keep their base motivated during the previous administration and it now uses fear of government.
